Undone<\/em>, book two of our GameLit\/LitRPG Head Hoppers<\/em> series, is available now on Kindle and in Kindle Unlimited. The print version is planned to be released by March 15, 2022. If things go well, it may be sooner, but some things we’re waiting on aren’t under our control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Co-authored by MK Eidson<\/a> and Emila H Thicke<\/a> and inspired by true events, Undone<\/em> is autofiction disguised as time travel science fiction and GameLit. Cover art licensed from SelfPubBookCovers.com\/Viergacht<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is unnecessary to have read book one of Head Hoppers<\/em> before reading book two, though some of the elements at the end of book two might be more appreciated if one has read book one. Book two provides context missing from book one, and sets the scene for subsequent novels in the series. Book three of the series, Illegal Avatars<\/em>, is currently in progress. The Kindle version of book three is available for pre-order<\/a>. We do plan to make Illegal Avatars<\/em> available via Kindle Unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is possible to read Undone<\/em> as a standalone novel, but to do so means choosing the worst of two possible endings to the story. The book is intended for a mature audience. Seventeen-year-olds can probably handle it; the authors claim they could have at that age. Here’s some of the fine print from the copyright page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This book uses explicit language. It is intended for readers 17 and older. The story contains role-playing game terminology and concepts, and dialogue\/scenes of: graphic sex; domestic and other forms of violence, including a fatal automobile accident; attempted suicide and other struggles with mental health issues; gender identification; sexual orientation; immoral acts and acts of questionable morals; ghosts; time travel; and nanobots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story passes the Bechdel test and the Reverse Bechdel test, though barely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The damned Critic is back on the bus. \u201cYou used adjectives and adverbs\u2014hallmarks of bad writing. You don\u2019t even deserve one star.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t wait for the bus to come to a stop or the door to open. \u201cI told you to get off the fucking bus.\u201d Holding the .22 caliber rifle with one hand as though it were a pistol, I aim at his belly and pull the trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cloud of red feathers spews from his mouth. His body folds over and his hands clutch at his wounded gut. At the next stop, he exits by toppling with no assistance from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stashing the rifle on the luggage rack, I grab my scroll and disembark, stepping on The Critic\u2019s fingers. I laugh at the crunching sound. \u201cMake way for the wizard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll ruin you if it\u2019s the last thing I do,\u201d shouts The Critic. He doesn\u2019t shake a fist with broken digits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bus lets me out next to my Ford in the mall parking lot. How convenient. I head inside the mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I unroll my scroll for Erica to see the design it bears. At first, she says nothing. Just grimaces and nods her head. \u201cI thought you\u2019d want to talk about this later. At seven? Take a little drive somewhere we can discuss things in private?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, I do.\u201d I undress her, except she\u2019s still clothed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe you shouldn\u2019t come in here every day.\u201d She taps the end of my nose with her forefinger. \u201cPeople might talk. Someone might talk to your wife. Do you want that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI suppose it\u2019s not wise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay, then. Run along. I\u2019ll find you in the parking lot. A little after seven. Hopefully I won\u2019t have any impromptu meetings at the end of my shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s your purse?\u201d I glance around, as though it might be lying amongst the merchandise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy purse? At the moment, it\u2019s in a locker. Why do you ask? Do you need to borrow some money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, no. No<\/em>.\u201d Can\u2019t have her thinking I\u2019m hurting for funds. \u201cIt\u2019s just, I\u2019d like to see your ID. Your driver\u2019s license. See what kind of picture you take.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re wondering if I\u2019m eighteen. Little too late for that, don\u2019t you think?\u201d With a wink, she spins on a high heel, shaking her slight hips, and strolls to a customer\u2019s side. \u201cMay I help you, miss?\u201d She\u2019s teasing me, and I don\u2019t know whether that\u2019s a good sign or bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
